Trade Ideas for 02/01/10

Friday the market weakness continued despite a strong opening hour. In less than 2 weeks, the 50-day moving average for the S&P 500 has flattened out, even turned slightly downward. The last time this average had a flat slope was the month of April:

Now as then, the market appears to be undergoing a transition. As well, it may pay to be suspicious of any sudden price move back to the average. A short-lived relief rally could be the next move here. Looking through my charts I saw a lot of big downside moves, as money is just clearing out of the market. Selling climax, or just the start of a monster slide (or both?)

We were stopped out of VXX.

I focus on the 50-day moving average because time and again the market is drawn to it, and I still think there's a good chance the market will revisit the average soon (like this week). The two long ideas for Monday are intended as small bets. However, if market weakness intensifies, the average could be much lower before the market revisits its 50. There's a couple of short ideas for this scenario.

Trade Idea for 01/29/10

It looked yesterday like a quick rally to the 50-day moving average was in the cards, but now that's questionable. Relief at the Fed announcement and Bernanke's reconfirmation didn't prevent the market from breaking Wednesday's lows. With a few short positions in hand, now's the time to sit back and find out just how weak this market is.

Trade Idea for 01/28/10

The Fed announcement provided a catalyst for a change in direction. After hitting a lower low, the market rebounded and now appears to be following the green scenario from a couple days back. We bought ALSK, PSQ and VXX today.

If the trend changed on January 19th, then this bounce is countertrend, should take the market up to the 50-day moving average but not extend much farther. While not a part of the system, the idea of initiating some short positions around this average is not without merit. The exit point would be at the market high on January 19th. This is a riskier trade because it's buying on weakness, and if it doesn't work out evokes a very different emotion at the point of exit that makes it harder to exit. But again, the idea is not without merit as the market often does a 1-3 day countertrend kiss of the 50-day moving average. I would look to Friday or Monday as likely candidates as far as timing of such a move.

Trade Ideas for 01/27/10

The market found a bit of support today near Friday's low. In the next couple of days we'll see if it can mount any sort of charge off this support. A bounce from here is well within range of the 50-day moving average, which may be too obvious. So I lean slightly toward the idea that the market will push to the downside before it manages a bounce of size. Whichever way it breaks, the market should trend for a few days.

DVAX was a scratch, opening too high, and we took a whipsaw with DXD.

Trade Ideas for 01/26/10

Today's session featured a weak attempt at a rally. Short-term, the market is in an interesting place. The key question is, is this first leg of the decline nearly done, or is it just getting started? Both scenarios are possibilities:

The green scenario has us going sideways for a few days, then to a slightly lower low before an oversold bounce. The second scenario has us falling quite a bit more before that happens. When in doubt, we go with the trend, but ease up on the risk-taking.

Some more short ideas for tomorrow, plus a biotech we've been stalking. The short-term trend is bearish enough that the 50-day moving averages are now flattening out. These ideas may end up being late, especially if the green scenario plays out, so don't risk too much.

Update for 01/25/10

The market followed through to the downside in a major way Friday, with major averages slicing through their 50-day moving averages, and it has now retraced back to the levels of November. In a few days wiping out months of gains. This is the type of sharp action that gives me some assurance that a major change in sentiment has taken place, perhaps enough to change the prevailing trend to bearish. In other words, the 10-month rally may be over, and no more new recovery highs, much less all-time highs.

Even if so, I don't think it's out of the question for the major averages to retag their 50-day moving averages. In October of 2007, the S&P bobbed and wove around this average when it began its initial descent. In March of 2009, it sliced through and then 5 sessions later came back to retest and base there. Perhaps we'll see the S&P back at its 50 this Friday. Let's see. For now, I'm keeping the sell-stops on our short positions loose; if the major trend has changed, we want to be reluctant to part with our shorts.

When the market gives back, it's certainly generous. We got taken out of all our long holdings, including a whipsaw out of PTEN. The S&P closed at the 50-day moving average; if that doesn't hold, we'll probably bounce back up to hit it in a week or so. If the rally is over, we shouldn't see prices go above today's high. Let's see how buying appetite fares in the coming days. We bought SRS today.

Trade Ideas for 01/19/10

The markets played against type, rolling over on expiration Friday, potentially throwing a wrench into option players' strategies. So far in the past couple of months, we haven't seen follow-through on the downside, and indeed the market bounced off support at the 1130 level. In terms of the price pattern, there's room for another higher high, but the market would need to regroup/chop/consolidate for a little bit (just not fall with any urgency). But, should the market follow through to the downside Tuesday (into the 1110-1120 range), we can forget about that higher high.

We sold CPST and GE for profits Friday and bought EEV. Monday the market is closed.

Trade Ideas for 01/13/10

The market took a hard tumble today. In particular, the precious metals-oil-commodities sectors did very badly, which is unusual because these sectors have almost exclusively keyed off of dollar action. The dollar didn't change that much today. This is to note that things are unstable once again. Tomorrow's action is important. An up day and we could see a move up lasting a few days or more. A down day and things could get ugly quickly. Many recent charts have shown me how ugly things can get—how quickly decent uptrends can turn into washouts. So we're no longer in that sweet spot in the rally. Instead there's the possibility the rally is over, or that there's one more spurt to go. I'm thinking the latter, because we haven't wiped out enough weeks of uptrend yet. So if the market should resume its winning ways tomorrow, hold onto your positions but look to unload them Friday or Monday. We were taken out of SVM for breakeven and RDN for a nice profit.

Update 01/12/10

The market gapped up at the open and then fell dramatically. By the end of the day, the Dow had surpassed its early highs in contrast to the other averages. We were stopped into BX and CTIC on the early surge and promptly stopped out when the market fell, and we were also taken out of HOLX for a loss and PDC for a gain.

The opening surge was like a miniature buying climax followed by a mini-collapse. One common pattern is for the market to subsequently recover in the coming days, surge to higher highs in a true buying climax before the real collapse. While there's potential for gains to be made in new positions, the risk outweighs the reward. Instead, we will try to sell our existing holdings in the next few days, unless the market stops us out of them for us.

More big breakouts today, and for the second day in a row, the major averages are just inching upward. True, making new highs each day, but there are many charts up double-digit percentages. Trade Ideas for 01/04/10

The market took a huge tumble in the last half hour of trading New Year's Eve. Just a deep pullback? It seems that way, perhaps tax-related selling. The drop was sudden and sharp, but not devastating. But we'll see next week. We lost a bunch of positions, including our hedge TWM (sadly) and VMW for losses, and CBG and SBGI for gains. We bought GNK.
